What is the importance of parent training that our BCBA wants to schedule weekly?
Parent training is one of the most important parts of ABA therapy because it helps your child make progress beyond therapy sessions and into everyday life.
When parents are trained, they learn how to use the same strategies as therapists—such as prompting, reinforcement, and behavior support—throughout the day. This creates consistency, which is key for children with autism. Instead of learning skills only during therapy hours, children begin to practice and use those skills at home, in the community, and with family members. This leads to faster progress and better long-term outcomes.
Parent training also helps reduce challenging behaviors because parents understand why behaviors happen and how to respond effectively. Rather than reacting in the moment, they can use proactive strategies to prevent behaviors and teach appropriate alternatives. In addition, it builds parent confidence, reduces stress, and helps families feel more in control and supported.
Another major benefit is generalization—your child learns to use skills with different people and in different settings, not just with the therapist. This is what makes progress meaningful and lasting.
In short, ABA therapy is most effective when it doesn’t stop at the session. When parents are actively involved and trained, they become a powerful part of their child’s success
