My Child Won't Wear New Clothes
It’s common for children, especially those with sensory sensitivities or rigid routines, to resist wearing new clothes. This can feel frustrating, but with patience and support, you can help your child feel more comfortable.
Start by letting your child explore new clothes at their own pace. Allow them to touch, smell, or even carry the clothing around before asking them to wear it. Pair the new item with a favorite outfit or activity to create positive associations. You can also try washing the clothes a few times to soften textures or removing tags that may cause discomfort.
Incorporate new clothes into pretend play—play “store” or “fashion show” to make the experience fun and low-pressure. Offer choices when possible (e.g., “Would you like to wear the blue shirt or the green one?”) to give your child a sense of control.
If needed, gradually build tolerance by setting small, achievable goals. For example, start with wearing the new item for just a minute, then gradually increase the time. Be sure to praise and reinforce each step, no matter how small.
